Message from Principal Kim
|
|
Congratulations to the new students of the month! We honor you for your good citizenship and scholarship.
This week, we celebrate the work of our student scientists at the Alice Deal Middle School science fair. The students who compete on the school level have been selected to represent their classes through class presentations.
Reaching the school competition is an achievement in itself. Students selected a topic, conducted initial research, designed and implemented an inquiry process, collected and analyzed data and findings, reflected on findings, and pondered future steps. Finally, they developed a strategy for presenting their work to their peers and teachers and made the presentation.
I am immensely proud of all of the students who did a project this year. And I hope it sparked even more questions than answers, so you will be motivated to begin setting up a project for next year! Winners at the school level will carry on Deal's outstanding tradition in the citywide competition, held in March.
None of this happens without sound instruction and support from teachers at every step of the process. Thanks to Ms. Hampton for her steady leadership and to the rest of the science department for their work with students to ignite the love of inquiry and research!
Principal Kim

Thanks & pat yourselves on the back! Last week we hosted a team of about eight teachers and administrators from Valencia Middle School, Arizona. Those educators got a lot out of talking to the teachers and the students about what makes Deal so unique and so high performing. They were impressed by our school practices and will be borrowing many of our ideas to improve their school. Nice work everyone!
Science Fair
The science department would like to thank the staff in advance for their flexibility with scheduling for our Deal Science Fair. We would not be able to host our annual fair for our budding scientists without the understanding and support of the wonderful Deal staff! Each student will have a green pass to excuse them from class during the judging period.
We also ask that the staff understand that the Science Department is experiencing "tight times" and the food purchases are solely for the judges. We will not have any extras this year to share with the staff.
Monday, set up tables in the gym Tuesday, registration of projects during science classes Wednesday, judging of projects from 8:30-12:30 Thursday, public viewing of projects 8:45-2:30
Deal Debates
On Saturday the Deal Debate team continued its winning tradition. There
were 44 teams in the tournament, 7 of them from Deal. Four of our teams
won top 10 trophies with the undefeated team of Luke Trinity, Nathan
Davis and Ross Pendergast taking second place and just one half of a
point behind first. Overall Deal won more debates than any other
school, taking home the Tournament Trophy yet again. Also recognized
with individual medals for outstanding speaker points were Derek
Levinson, Sasha Rickard, and Liyana Ido. Nice work debaters! Thanks to fabulous Coach Sweeney!
Pennies for Patients
The Student Council is proud to announce the beginning of Deal's Pennies for Patients campaign. Our campaign runs from February 2 - February 20. Pennies for Patients raises money to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in its mission to find a cure for blood cancers. Please bring in your pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters to support this cause. You will donate your coins in your homeroom. Stay tuned for fun rewards based on the homerooms that collect the most money to support finding a cure. Eighth Grader Vision ScreeningOn Wednesday morning the Lyons Club will return to conduct vision screening in the cafeteria from 9:30 to 11:30 only. Students are asked to test with their eye glasses on (glasses should not be left in the lockers or homes). Parents will be informed if further vision testing is needed. Any concerns or questions, please call the school nurse at 202- 939-2009. Student CouncilStudent Council members please remember to attend this Tuesday's meeting after school so that we can plan for our Valentine's Day celebration. Attention all Deal Students Interested in Hispanic Culture!
Join Ms. Sonick's Spanish club. In the Spanish club you will have the opportunity to learn Spanish without being concerned with what grade you receive, make food and drinks such as sangria and guacamole, create crafts, and watch movies. Any Deal student can join, even if they are not enrolled in a Spanish class. If you are enrolled in a Spanish class, this is a perfect time to receive extra help. If interested, come to room G-5 on Wednesdays, starting at 3:20. Hasta miercoles!" Costa Rica & France Trip Meetings There will be two pre-departure trip meetings for the 8th graders traveling to Costa Rica & France during spring break. The meetings will be on February 5th and March 5th from 6:30 - 7:30 pm. Please mark your calendars! It is very important for every traveler to be present at both meetings with a parent/guardian.
National History Day Help Is Here! Got questions about how to put together a process paper? Unclear about how and where to buy materials for a successful exhibit board? Help is here! Ms. Mostoller will meet with students after school today in room 253 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Come with your questions. No appointment necessary, but please make sure your parents have given you permission to remain after school.
DCIAA Indoor Track Championship The Deal indoor track team will be competing in the DCIAA Junior High School Championship meet this Tuesday from 9-5 p.m. Therefore participating students will need to miss the entire day of school. A list with students' names will be placed in mailboxes today. Please see Coach McDowell if you have any questions or concerns or if there is anyone you do not feel should miss the class time. All students will be responsible for getting assignments ahead of time.
Capital City Jazz Project ContinuesAlice Deal Middle School is participating in The Capitol Jazz Project. The Capitol Jazz Project is a partnership between Washington Performing Arts Society (WPAS) and DCPS in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center. This collaboration supports the study of music through jazz instruction, drawn from the new DC Music Standards and a jazz curriculum created by Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center. New dates will have to be determined and posted as soon as possible. There will be two workshops on each day, the first during 5th period and the second at 6th. Students have been instructed to get their work completed early. Teachers, please keep the list of students that was placed in your mailbox for all Jazz project related events.
Mid-Year Conferences
Mid-Year Conferences for most teachers will be scheduled this week. Joe Corbi's at Deal
The Music Department sold Joe Corbi's in order to raise money for their trip to Cleveland, Ohio. All items must be picked on Feb. 11, 2009 before 3:30 pm. There is no place to store food so it is vital that everyone picks up their orders. Thank you for your support!
Department of Music Listserv
The Music Department uses a listserv in order to communicate information to its students and parents. All students involved with the Department of Music should sign up to be a member of this listserv. To become a member send an email mail to roger.jackson@dc.gov.
