Message from Principal Kim
Welcome back from spring break!
I expect that you had a the rest and rejuvenation you needed. While you were relaxing at home, traveling in Europe with classmates, visiting family, or babysitting younger siblings, our three-year construction project was winding down. In recent days, including this past weekend, the Deal custodial team and the construction team have been busy cleaning the building in anticipation of your return. You are fortunate to be the first students living and learning in this beautiful, new space. Please take good care of it, so your younger brothers and sisters -- and future generations to come -- can also enjoy a nice space.
Speaking of beautiful, have you seen this week's weather forecast? Students are reminded that, in lieu of a uniform policy, we have a clear dress code. As the weather grows warmer, please remember that short shorts and skirts, as well as spaghetti strap tank tops are not permitted. Also, you may not wear flip-flops. Unsecure footwear causes unnecessary danger in crowded hallways and stairwells.
Now that we are entering the 4th advisory, stay focused on your academics. We have too much to laugh about and learn together to waste any time or negative energy on reminding you of school expectations.
One final treat awaits you this week: If you are available on Saturday from 10:30 am - 2 pm, consider being a part of a televised food tasting event that will be filmed at Deal. Please read the "Student & Parent Information" section of this week's bulletin for details.
Have a wonderfully productive learning week.
Principal Kim

Final Push 2010 For the last few weeks (and all the way up to the DC CAS testing dates), Mr. Barr and Ms. Mazzone have been working with select students to support their success with the upcoming DC-CAS. These targeted lessons have been designed to address individual weaknesses with particular areas of the English and Math standards. For these students, the teachers have decided to add one session to the current schedule this Saturday, April 10. On that day, students involved with the Final Push are invited to work with Mr. Barr and Ms. Mazzone from 9 am until 12 noon at Alice Deal. See you then!
Ready, Set, Go Approximately twenty-five 6th graders have been selected to work with Ms. Neal during the next two weeks in preparation for the DC-CAS. These students will focus on very specific math skills and standards. They will have a little extra homework as well. Additionally, all 6th graders will be eligible for a weekly raffle to be held on Friday, April 9 and Thursday, April 15 based on their participation in our lunchtime DC-CAS review. |
Student and Parent information..
Deal Students are Invited to be a Part of a Televised Food Tasting Event this Saturday!
We can't name names, but a certain highly rated food show will be in the Deal cafeteria this Saturday. Students are invited to sample the healthy school lunches that will be prepared by some very
talented chefs. If you can make it, you must arrive by 10:30 am for a briefing, followed by food-tasting sessions and small-group interviews to share your opinions. Students must remain until the taping ends at about 2 pm.
Because it will be a televised, all participants'
parents must sign an appearance and confidentiality agreement on behalf of
themselves and their children. The first 60 students from each grade-level to return the permission slip will be selected for this event. Please see your grade-level assistant principal during your lunch period to get the permission slip today!
Deal Spellers Stand-out at Citywide Spelling Bee On Saturday, March 20 Jacob Korn and Seamus Lynch represented Alice Deal in the Citywide Spelling Bee. Thirty-seven students from around the city were invited and twenty seven young men and women competed. Words such as homogeneous and croesis were spelled correctly. In total there were fifty-four rounds of spelling; Jacob Korn finished in second place and Seamus Lynch finished in third place. Our young men won many prizes including being honored at the April 16 Nationals baseball game. The Citywide spelling bee will air on NBC on April 10. Congratulations to both Jacob and Seamus for a job very well done!
National History Day at Deal
Congratulations to the Humanities Department for another successful NHD school contest. More than 150 students submitted exhibit boards, research papers, performances, documentaries and websites for consideration to panels of judges at the annual school competition on March 16. Deal welcomed 30 historians, journalists, curators, and experts to evaluate student research and interpretation around the theme Innovation in History: Impact and Change.
The top projects in each category will advance to the city-wide contest held at Howard University on Saturday, April 24. Every teacher in the department has at least one project entered, an indication that the discipline of history is thriving at all grade levels here at Deal.
Music Department Spring Trip Deposit is Due
The total cost of the trip to Hershey Park is $260, which is due on April 7. We are still in need of chaperones for this trip. If you are a parent and interested in going to help, please alert Mr. Frye or Mr. Jackson.
National Junior Honor Society
Would you like to be honored for your excellent academic achievements? Are you an honor roll student that has demonstrated leadership in or outside of school? If you answered yes then National Junior Honor Society is for you!
Eighth grade students ONLY that have earned a 3.0 GPA in the 7th grade and 8th grade should pick up a National Junior Honor Society application from Ms. Hampton in room 301W. Applications are due April 12.
This year you must have completed 10 hours of community service (in the last two years) to be inducted.
It's time to register for Summer School Deal students will attend summer school at Oyster-Adams, not Columbia Heights as previously announced. We will be at the Adams location. Deal teachers have been invited to work at this site so your children will see familiar faces. Summer School begins June 28 and ends August 6. Classes take place from 8:00 am until 12:00 noon with lunch following from 12:00 noon - 1:00 pm. There is no afternoon program for middle school students. The focus of classes will be math and language arts. Deal's afterschool coordinator, Ms. Berkey, is responsible for summer school enrollment. Enrollment forms are available in the Welcome Center now or you may get one from your child's counselor. All completed applications are due to Ms. Berkey by April 30. Applications received after that day will be placed on a wait list. If you have any questions, please contact margaret.berkey@dc.gov.
Adolescent Prevention Education Program
The Adolescent Prevention Education Program headed by Children's National Medical Center will be coming to Alice Deal on April 14, 2010 to provide a health education workshop concentrating on promoting positive decision making in sexual behavior for the 7th graders who are taking PE/Health classes this semester. The 7th grade students with their parents or guardians sign permission will be able to attend the workshop. Please return all signed permission slips to Nurse Pringle no later than April 8. For any questions or concerns feel free to contact Nurse Pringle on 202-939-2009. Overdue Books PLEASE REMEMBER TO RETURN ALL OVERDUE LIBRARY BOOKS so that everyone can enjoy reading them. If you have overdue books, the library staff will contact you by telephone and your homeroom teachers will give you a written overdue notice. Books overdue by three months are considered lost and require immediate payment for replacement. It is VERY IMPORTANT that your library record be clear of overdue books and fines immediately.
We Need Your Used Tennis Shoes and Soccer Cleats
As part of our community and global outreach, we are collecting used tennis shoes and cleats to help eradicate poverty and support rainforest preservation. In conjunction with the Perpetual Prosperity Pumps Foundation (www.pppafrica.org), our students will be collecting used (not abused) shoes for this worthy cause. Please place shoe donations in the collection bins located in front of the Welcome Center and by the gymnasium. We look forward to your donations. If you have questions, please contact the Physical Education Department at alicedeal.pe@gmail.com or Coach Downing at coachdowning@yahoo.com.
DC One Replacement Cards
Students, please remember that once you have requested a replacement DC One card, you are required to pay for it (even if you find the original card). Deal is charged for these cards from the city and so you must pay for the request.

assignments or projects, or who just need a place to work can join us in ZAP!

ZAP! pass and to drop off their books. Let's stay on top of the work for the last advisory!
* Special note: there will be no ZAP! on

Food for thought...
Teachers Learning from Video
Recordings of their Own Teaching
In
this Kappan article, Michigan State
University/East Lansing researchers Meilan Zhang, Mary Lundeberg, and Jan
Eberhardt report that it's a "rocky road" to get teachers to be successful
researchers of their own practice. Problems include underdeveloped research
skills, vague research questions, and difficulties collecting and analyzing
data.
But Zhang, Lundeberg, and
Eberhardt believe they have a way to bring teacher research down to earth:
recording lessons on video. This, they say, moves aspiring teacher researchers
from the vague to the specific and is "a powerful tool to support teacher
learning because of its unique capability to capture elusive classroom practice
for later study. Video recordings allow teacher researchers to replay classroom
events and notice aspects of classroom situations that they were too busy to
notice while teaching." Watching the videos gives teachers "an unbiased, rich
account of their teaching." The key steps are:
-
Choosing
a focus question - for example, a problem in one's practice;
-
Planning
for video recording - locating the equipment, deciding what to capture, and
operating the camera.
-
Conducting
video analysis - deciding whether to focus on content, student-student
interactions, teacher-student interactions, student thinking, assessment, or
teaching strategies;
-
Sharing
video footage with other teachers in a study group;
-
Reflecting
on your learning.
