International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program

IB

Big News! We just became an IB World School

The International Baccalaureate Organization notified Deal this week that as of February, 2010, we are an official IB school. This recognizes the hard work of all at Deal, from the administration that had the vision to pursue authorization to the teachers who did the work of implementing the program. Special thanks goes out to the Deal community for being ardent supporters and champions of building a stronger Deal. Of course, formal authorization is just the start - the program will continue to grow and develop over the coming years. There will be additional information and announcements in the coming weeks.

Just World Festival 2010

Twenty Deal students participated in the 5th Annual Just World Festival this past week, joining over 600 students from many schools in the DC/Maryland/Virginia region. Students heard presentations on social justice, cultural activities, political issues; they learned about fair trade from a host of speakers; and they eagerly surrounded themselves with the sights and sounds of the world in which they live.

Message from Principal Kim

Drum roll please!

Alice Deal Middle School is now officially an IB World School!  We have not only the great distinction of being the first public Middle Years program in the District of Columbia, but Alice Deal now joins an impressive group of 749 other IB Middle Years Program (MYP) school in 70 other countries around the world.  I am incredibly proud of the work we have accomplished within the last few years to get to this point!  A more detailed account of this journey will soon be coming to your door step in this month's Deal PTA Newsletter.

Thanks to all of the teachers, staff members, families & students -- both present and past -- who helped us achieve this goal.  Many committed hearts & minds started this journey in 2006 and have passed the torch to others to get us to this point.  This is just the beginning of how far we will go to stand out not only in this region, but on the world stage!

Graphic Novel Highlights
Thanks to the wonderful generosity of Georgetown Comics, the Deal library's collection of graphic novels and manga continues to grow and volumes continue to fly off the shelves. As you know, comics make great reading - but did you know graphic novels and manga contain all the literary elements you can imagine, like plot, foreshadowing, character development, theme, and setting?

In fact, we love the literary quality of comic books so much that our library book groups Are reading the Bone series, by Jeff Smith, this month.
Considered a classic in the graphic novel genre, "the series chronicles the adventures of the Bone cousins--plucky Fone Bone, scheming Phony Bone, and easygoing Smiley Bone-- who leave their home of Boneville and are swept up in a Tolkienesque epic of royalty, dragons, and unspeakable evil forces out to conquer humankind.

If the series doesn't sound like something you want to try, we have many other types of graphic novels in the library. For instance, John Porcellino's Thoreau at Walden illustrates Henry David Thoreau's life, using excerpts from Thoreau's writing as the text. A bibliography and endnotes provide sources for further reading. In a completely different vein, Gene Yuen Wang's American Born Chinese - the first graphic novel recognized by the National Book Foundation - weaves Chinese folk tale, a coming of age story, and questions of cultural identity to magnificent, thought-provoking effect.

What other amazing graphic novels are out there? Come let us know. Ms. Allen, Mr. Hurst, and Ms. Isaacson look forward to seeing you in the library!

LIBRARY BOOK CLUB
Students, do you like to read graphic novels?   The Library Book Club will meet on Wednesday, March 24 during lunchtime to discuss Bone, by Jeff Smith, or a graphic novel of your choice.  COME JOIN US!

OVERDUE BOOKS

PLEASE REMEMBER TO RETURN ALL OVERDUE LIBRARY BOOKS so that everyone can enjoy reading them.  If you have overdue books, the library staff will contact you by telephone and your homeroom teachers will give you a written overdue notice.  Further, books overdue by three months are considered lost and require immediate payment for replacement. It is VERY IMPORTANT that your library record be clear of overdue books and fines before the end of the school year.

2010 CAMP FULBRIGHT JUNIOR INTERNSHIP PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT

The Korean-American Educational Commission (KAEC), which administers the Fulbright program in Korea, would like to invite students in the 7th - 10th grade to apply for the Camp Fulbright Junior Internship Program.  The program, held in conjunction with our annual Camp Fulbright summer camp, is a three-week cultural exchange program through which middle and high school students from the US can meet and interact with students from all over Korea.  Camp Fulbright 2010 will be held at Jungwon University in the Goesan area near the city of Cheongju.

Participants in the program will experience Korean culture through language classes and hands-on cultural activities, and participate in workshops to build leadership, teamwork, and other skills.  They will also assist our camp staff-a team comprised of Fulbright grantees from the US and a group of Korean counselors-in camp preparation and operation, and join in activities with the Korean campers.

Selection of participants in this program will be highly competitive, and it is recommended that individuals, schools, organizations, or others interested in sending students work quickly to find qualified candidates and send in applications by the deadline.

Please review the program details and contact Camp Fulbright Director Vinnie Flores at vflores@fulbright.or.kr or 82-2-3275-4010 for more information.
