IB Middle Years Program Coordinator
Deal Gives Back - Community Service
Alice Deal is committed to making community service a part of our students' development and learning. We have planned grade level activities for June 7, 8, and 9 to ensure that every student has a role in giving back to our community. The 6th grade will focus on school-based activities, the 7th grade will focus on our Alice Deal and Tenleytown neighborhood, and the 8th grade has formed partnerships with elementary schools across the city. Our 8th grade partner schools include Maury, Malcolm X, Nalle, Hearst, Shepherd, Randle Highlands, Orr, Ross, H.D. Cooke, Thomson, and Marie Reed Elementary Schools. Each 8th grade homeroom will be partnering with a different school on a range of activities.
We are looking for possible chaperones and volunteers to help make Deal Gives Back a rewarding experience for our entire community. If you are interested in helping out, please contact our grade level community-service coordinators. Ms. Popaditch is coordinating the 6th grade projects, Mr. Gueltig, Ms. Washington, and Ms. Wisniewski are coordinating the 7th grade, and Mr. Albright and Mr. Sheldon are coordinating the 8th grade projects. We appreciate your support in our first year of Deal Gives Back.
Assessment and Curriculum Work
This past weekend, the 6th grade Math, 6th grade Humanities, and 8th grade Language A (English) teachers worked on summative assessments and planning for the coming school year. This coming weekend, the 7th and 8th grade Math and 8th grade Humanities teams will be working on their assessments and planning. This work is part of our continuous school-wide effort to evaluate curriculum, pacing, rigor, and learning and to align our DCPS standards and IB MYP objectives. Thanks to the teachers and administrators who are making themselves available for this effort!

 Message from Principal Kim
Welcome back from Hershey, music students! I hope you enjoyed your experiences at the music festival and the park.
We have a busy week ahead! On Wednesday, I invite the Deal community to come to school for the 7th grade production of the Music Man, starting at 7 pm. We expect a full house, so please come early to be make sure you get a seat. As is always the case for evening events, students must be accompanied by a parent. Students without parents will be turned away.
On Thursday, the Deal PTA hosts a parent workshop on cyber bullying. Please come learn about the implications and solutions for you and your child.
On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Deal hosts our annual Spring Book Fair. Please come and buy books for the summer reading list as well as your home library. The money from this sale will support the Deal media center.
Saturday, we host the registration fair. So far we only have had 80 parents register their children for next year. These registration numbers will have negative implications for receiving our projected budget and for master scheduling. Please come between 9-noon on Saturday to register your child.
Finally, this week we celebrate Educator Appreciation Week at Alice Deal Middle School. The fabulous Deal PTA has organized some ways to recognize our teachers, but I also ask that each student and family send in a little note of thanks to your favorite teacher or teachers sometime this week. We do a tough job and it is always nice to feel appreciated!
Principal Kim

Food for thought...
Helping
Students Become More Sophisticated About AdvertisementsIn
this article in Middle Ground,
Appalachian State University professor David Considine suggests five aspects of
commercial advertising that help adolescents look more critically at consumer
products and how they are marketed: -
Product - the item or service that's being sold; -
Purchasers - the target audience - for example, a Jitterbug cell phone
ad stressing "You won't find a camera, the Internet, or a complicated menu with
confusing pictures"; -
Pitch - what persuasive device is being used - everything from the
Marlboro man to sell cigarettes to Snoopy as the image of MetLife Insurance; -
Placement - in what magazine, program, or TV time-slot is it being
positioned - for example, where would a company market a sugary breakfast
cereal? Luxury cars? -
Presentation - how it's packaged, including the words, typestyle,
color, images, wrapper, and shape. "Helping our students recognize the tools, techniques,
and language of contemporary advertising might temper adolescent impulsivity
and the need for instant gratification," says Considine. "Simultaneously, it
can nurture healthy skepticism and more skillful consumers for the 21st
century." He suggests several websites as resources: · Ad*Access at Duke
University, with over 7,000 newspaper and magazines ads from 1911 to 1955: http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/adaccess
· Presidential campaigns since
1952: http://livingroomcandidate.org
· PBS with clips and tricks of
advertising: http://pbskids.org/dontbuyit/advertisingtricks · Fun TV advertising from
earlier decades: http://www.retrojunk.com
